　　那场大火，烧尽了马贵堂多年的心血和操劳，转眼间，马家从小康之家变得一贫如洗，只得搬回三间草房的老宅居住。
　　对于马贵堂来说，那是撕心裂肺的痛，他悔恨交加，卧床不起，两天水米不进。到第三天，他勉强支撑起身子，看着精神恍惚的儿女，一声长叹，泪流满面，全家顿时哭声一片。
　　待哭声稍歇，马贵堂说道：“事已至此，再哭无用。咱家在扶沟怕是活不出精气神了，去开封闯闯吧，开封地面大，听说卖个烤红薯、摆个茶水摊也能养活几口人。”
　　经过几天准备，马家七口人告别家乡父老，推一辆独轮车前往当时的河南省会开封。一路风霜雨雪，四天后来到开封，在南泰山庙附近找到了一个暂住的地方。

　　“画锅”就是在地上画个大圈开始表演，叫这个名字，无非是靠它吃饭的意思；“撂地”的意思和“画锅”差不多，只不过场地相对固定。在那个年代，相国寺是开封的热闹处，寺外是繁华的闹市，寺前院东西两廊摊贩挨门排户，二殿前后则有着各种各样的民间娱乐，说书、唱戏、练武术、摔跤、算卦、变戏法、相声、玩杂技等，热闹非凡。
　　在这里打拳卖艺并不是简单的事。在熙熙攘攘的闹市吸引人们注意，赢得众多看客的掌声，不但要有真功夫，节目设计还要新奇、醒目，动作还须舒展、漂亮、大方。如果没有绝活，被人砸场子不说，吸引不了观众，根本无法在这里生存。马华亭在大相国寺这个舞台上，表现出了过人的才华，他带着妹妹和儿女，在这里牢牢地站稳了脚跟。
　　不过一开始他们赚不到多少钱。马家人功夫地道，马华亭的醉拳、弹弓绝活，马素真的双刀，马国英的硬气功，马克勤的九节鞭，等等，都惊险好看，马家“画锅”之旁，观众很多，喝彩声不断。但到了掏钱的时候，却往往很少有出手大方的看客。后来有人给马贵堂出主意：打拳卖艺收点钱，行话叫“清卦”；练“玩意儿”兼带卖药、看病，这叫“混卦”。自古“武医不分”，你们马家人世代习武，有一手正骨绝活，还能治疗一些疑难杂症，何不走“混卦”路线？
